As long as human beings continue to attach so much …

As long as human beings continue to attach so much importance to the possession of objects, cars, houses, land, prestigious positions, and so on, they will always be in conflict with one another. For, the things that can be acquired on the physical plane are limited in number; it is impossible for everyone to live in opulence. This does not mean that it is impossible for everyone to be happy – on the contrary – but happiness is not opulence. We need very little in the way of material possessions in order to be happy, so long as we understand that we have work to do to direct our needs towards the psychic plane and, beyond this, to the spiritual plane, where the possibilities are infinite. There, we can all eat and drink to our heart’s content without creating conflict with our neighbours or living in fear of being robbed of what we have acquired.
