In the soil that we walk upon, there live beings that were …

In the soil that we walk upon, there live beings that were once endowed with movement, feeling and thought but have so descended into matter that now we trample them underfoot. This is how we can explain Jesus’ words: ‘If salt has lost its taste,… it is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled underfoot.’ All creatures that have lost their salt and abandoned the spirit are trampled underfoot. All societies, nations and families which have lost their salt are crushed. Why? So that they will be forced to find their flavour again. Of course, this point of view will seem senseless to many, and no geologist or palaeontologist will accept it. And yet, it’s true: we walk upon beings who once lost their salt. Whether or not you believe me doesn’t make any difference. What do we know of the civilizations that preceded our own?
