Our life is nothing but a succession of exchanges made with the universe. Cosmic life enters us, we permeate it with our own emanations and then we return it. Again we absorb this life, and again we return it. These continuous exchanges are what we call nutrition, respiration and also love. And the moment when these exchanges cease is what we call death. So we must make exchanges with the earth in order to live on the physical level, exchanges with water to live on the astral level of the heart, and exchanges with air to live on the mental level of the intellect.* And lastly, we must make exchanges with heat and light in order to live the life of the soul and the spirit. Everyone knows that the physical body needs food to survive, but the heart, mind, soul and spirit also need to be nourished. It is ignorance of this truth that causes humans to lose all sense of life’s meaning.
