The intellect in humans is situated between spirit and matter. When our intellect sees matter impeding or blocking the divine impulses of the spirit, it has the power to intervene to restore the spirit’s force and open doors for it. The spirit is always pushing from within, but humans are not always aware of it. They do not realize that they can either facilitate the work of the spirit or oppose it by giving greater weight to matter. Initiates have opened schools precisely in order for human beings to become conscious of this reality and decide to work to purify themselves, and achieve self-mastery so that the spirit may at last manifest itself. The great Masters know that humans have the power to determine themselves by means of their intellect, so as to decide how best to act. This is why they insist that humans become conscious of the role they can play in the universe by supporting the work of the spirit upon matter.
