What do I say to those who come to confide their grief to …

What do I say to those who come to confide their grief to me when someone they loved has left them? In France you have a proverb which says: ‘One lost, ten found’, but this isn’t always a consolation at the time. So I say to these people: ‘Think of your beloved’s actions as merely an escapade. It may last ten years, twenty years, or much longer, but it doesn’t matter. One day this person you love will return, if not in this lifetime, then in the next, and in a different form. If you sincerely loved him, helped him and made sacrifices for him, the law of justice will require him to come back to you and make amends for his lack of gratitude, and you will meet again.’ Sincere, selfless love creates bonds that cannot be broken.
