Before you complain and rebel against trials and obstacles, try to see them as an opportunity to learn to rely on your own spiritual strength. If you were at peace and satisfied, if nothing were troubling you, you would remain at a superficial level; whereas, when you feel isolated and sad you are forced to leave the surface and seek succour within yourself. And the role of initiation is precisely to teach the disciple to find true strength and true support by turning inward. Initiation used to take place in the temples; now it happens everywhere in life and at times you least expect. You think, ‘But why aren’t we given signs to warn us of the trials we’re about to endure?’ Because unforeseen events force us to find salvation deep within ourselves and, therefore, to make greater efforts.
