What can the figure of the circle teach us about our inner …

What can the figure of the circle teach us about our inner life? That the words ‘centre’ and ‘periphery’ do not just refer to geometry. Centre and periphery also represent foci for forces that act on us: the forces of the centre, of the spirit, regenerate us, while those of the periphery, of matter, crush us. Of course, human beings are made in such a way, and the conditions of their life are such, that they cannot keep all their attention fixed on the centre and neglect the periphery. They are forced to move out toward the periphery, that is, to study matter and work with it. But they run the danger of breaking the spiritual link with the centre and dissipating their efforts. This is why they must never lose sight of their own divine centre, which unifies everything, brings everything together and makes sense of everything. And from this centre they can extend an infinite number of threads out toward the periphery. As they establish their connection to their centre, so they create in themselves a firm base: once they are firmly attached, they can venture toward the periphery without any danger.
