Many people think it is the ignorant who are most impressed …

Many people think it is the ignorant who are most impressed by the knowledge of the learned, and that it is the wicked who admire the qualities of people who are good. Not at all, and in fact it is often the contrary. If you want to know what stage of evolution people have reached, observe whether or not they are able to appreciate the worth and the qualities of others. If they are not, it means that they themselves are not yet worth much. In order to recognise certain qualities in others, one has to have cultivated them in oneself. In the same way, in order to recognise the Being that surpasses all beings, to appreciate His wisdom, His perfection, and His splendour, one has to have developed in oneself some of this perfection. We can perceive only that which corresponds to what we are.
