When we eat, we take care not to swallow just anything. …

When we eat, we take care not to swallow just anything. Well, you must be as attentive to the quality of the thoughts and feelings you allow within you as you are to that of your food. Customs officers are placed at the frontier of every country to check those who enter and leave. Have you also placed customs officers at the border of your inner country to watch that nothing dangerous and harmful is allowed through? I am afraid not, so anything from anywhere gets in, and you are poisoned. Put your customs officers in place, and for every thought and feeling that arises, say immediately: 'You, wait a minute, where are you going? What will you bring me if I accept you?' You will thus anticipate the consequences of the thoughts and feelings which come to visit you, and you must accept only those which strengthen you spiritually.
