Communion involves making an exchange, that is, knowing …

Communion involves making an exchange, that is, knowing both how to give and to receive. The Eucharistic host can bestow the greatest of blessings to a communicant, but if they do not give the necessary love and respect in return, we can no longer talk of communion; it is theft, a dishonest deed. In order to commune with God, we must also be able to offer him something. Not that God, with all his riches, needs anything from us! But in our effort to give something of ourselves to him, we awaken in ourselves certain spiritual centres through which we receive his blessings. Although we say that we owe love, respect, gratitude and loyalty to God, in fact it is not for God’s benefit, but for ours.
