In the presence of certain profound works – philosophical, initiatic, mystical – and before the beauty of certain works of art, we realize that their creators have contemplated a high and distant reality that escapes ordinary consciousness. In order to access this reality, they have traversed not only the opaque layers of physical matter but also the obscure layers of psychic matter. Until we decide to follow them on this path, what we believe to be reality remains a mere semblance of it, a distorted reflection, or at best a wrapping, a veil which hides it from our view. To lift a veil, to remove a veil, is the purpose of initiation. This is the meaning of the expression ‘to lift the veil of Isis’ which has been handed down to us by tradition.
