To receive the Holy Spirit can be compared to receiving a lightning bolt from heaven, and there is no experience more sublime or more meaningful. But just because a human being has been struck by this lightning bolt does not mean he immediately becomes all-knowing, all-powerful and perfect. No, he is merely given the possibility of becoming so, and it is up to him to work with this fire. Unfortunately, he can also lose this grace, and no loss is more terrible. Many of the spiritualists, mystics and initiates who have possessed this fire have lost it in one way or another. Some have managed to regain it, but at what cost in terms of suffering, repentance and labour! They had to humble themselves and beg at length for the fire of the spirit to return. But once the fire consents, it takes hold so powerfully and drives its roots so deeply into our being that it never leaves: it directs, orders and orients our life.
