‘I am giving you a talisman, which you can use to evoke …

‘I am giving you a talisman, which you can use to evoke spirits who will come to your service.’ This is what many disciples hope to hear their master say! But they are still so weak and inexperienced that with such a talisman they will be destroyed. So what good would their master be doing them? In the spiritual life more than elsewhere, it is dangerous to try to take short cuts. You will only be ready to receive the greatest secrets of initiation when you have dealt with all the subjects you now find meaningless and trivial. Exercises to develop self-mastery, stability, patience, selflessness and generosity are of no interest to you. It is these, however, that will save your life, whereas those things that interest you may well bring you the greatest misfortunes. You must re-examine all the rules and methods you have put aside as secondary, and you can then address those domains which require the greatest control over your thoughts and feelings.
