Everyone knows how to draw a circle using a compass. We place the point on the paper to establish the centre, and by holding firmly to this centre we are able to trace the circumference. The centre comes first, then, and we can only draw the circumference if we hold to this centre. By establishing the circle as a symbol of creation, the initiates wanted to emphasize the idea that everything that exists has a link with the centre and can only survive by preserving and maintaining this link. It is impossible for anyone who cuts his ties with the centre to have a clear idea of the world or the entities and forces which work in it, but he also deprives himself of the current of pure life which flows from the Source, from God himself. The equilibrium of cosmic life is based on the relationship which the periphery unceasingly maintains with the centre. All parts must converge on the centre, for it is the centre that sustains their existence. An example of this relationship between centre and periphery is our solar system, where the planets tirelessly orbit the sun in harmonious movement.
