Daily Meditation: Sunday, April 1, 2007

We exist in God, and God exists in us. If we think of him …

We exist in God, and God exists in us. If we think of him as something outside ourselves, it means we are outside him as well. We are therefore like objects to him, and objects are taken up or put aside according to one’s needs. A cook uses saucepans to prepare a meal and then puts them away in a cupboard until she needs them again. If saucepans were conscious, they would groan: ‘Our mistress has forgotten us! When she used us, we were warmed, and her spoon made a pleasant sound as she scraped us. But now she has abandoned us. How cruel!’ And as long as you believe you exist outside the Lord, you are like these saucepans: you feel as if he takes you up and then abandons you. But once you know your being is in him, that you are a part of him, in his head, his organs and his limbs, you will be with him and in him forever.
