Joy can be likened to an immense ladder. Yes, there are infinite degrees of joy, just as there are for many other states of consciousness. When you eat there is a certain joy, when you breathe there is another, when you walk, read, sing, meet and embrace those you love… all these activities provide different kinds of joy, more or less intense. But on this scale of joy, we experience the greatest and highest joy through union with the Creator. The Creator has endowed his creatures with infinite possibilities for joy, but he has reserved the greatest bliss for those who achieve union with him. And when a human being tastes this state of oneness, he begins to radiate the Divinity. He consciously diffuses divine life all around him for the benefit of all the world’s creatures, to help them and show them the way. This is the highest degree of joy.
