The role of a spiritual master is to give his disciples true knowledge, even if he knows they are not yet able to put it into practice. He must give them a better way of understanding things but at the same time be patient and indulgent and accept their inadequacies. You are familiar with the parable in the Gospels about the banquet. A king decides to give a great feast, but when the time comes, and he sends his servants out to bring in the guests, they all find excuses for not coming. One has just bought a field; another has bought oxen and wants to try them out; a third has just been married. In their view, all of this is more important than accepting the invitation of a king! Well, their excuses are like the excuses most disciples find for taking care of their material interests and pleasures instead of attending the banquet of the Lord.
