A scientist will tell you that only those things which can …

A scientist will tell you that only those things which can be observed, calculated, measured, weighed, compared, and classified are real and worthy of attention. All the rest is of dubious interest and should be ignored. Very well, but this severely limits the scope of his consciousness, since two-thirds (for the sake of argument, let us say two-thirds) of the life of a human being is taken up by activities which cannot be weighed or measured. Yes, two-thirds of our time is spent in living: nothing more. And if that two-thirds merits no attention, is of no interest, one wonders why a scientist goes on living. He breathes, eats, drinks, sleeps, and walks; he has thoughts, feelings, sensations, and desires; he meets other people, talks to them - sometimes embraces them - and he does all of this without wondering whether he is doing it scientifically. How can he bear to live a life which is so unscientific? He should refuse!
