Philosophers and poets often speak of life as a journey. …

Philosophers and poets often speak of life as a journey. From the moment we are born we embark on a voyage of discovery, venturing into unknown regions. These are regions that lie on the outside of us but also, and more particularly, regions within us. Some of these regions are friendly and we are welcome to stop there a while. Others are inhospitable and must be avoided, or fled as quickly as possible if we have been unfortunate enough to set foot in them. Even if you stay locked up inside your room all your life, you can discover and enjoy inwardly everything that exists on earth, the landscapes and all the natural phenomena. And so, if some days you feel weighed down and stifled, it is because, without realizing it, you have descended too far down into the lower regions and now you feel quashed. Use your thought, therefore, to lift yourself out of the depths and rise up into the open air. And if at other times you feel fulfilled, inspired, able to defy the laws of gravity, it is because, knowingly or unknowingly, you have projected yourself very high, to the summit of your inner being. Now try to remain there for as long as possible.
