When we open our eyes on the world, we are struck by its …

When we open our eyes on the world, we are struck by its richness and diversity. Yet this diversity has its origins in one single essence: the divine emanation. The universe was formed by successive condensations and differentiations, as we are told in the Emerald Tablet, which sets forth the principles of alchemy: ‘And just as all things come from One and by mediation of One, thus all things have been derived from this one thing by adaptation.’ It is because the universe is made of one single matter that, within this matter, things can pass from one state to another or from one form to another. This one matter, this primordial matter which is the source of life in all its forms is what alchemists call ‘chaos’. Chaos is the ‘deep’ mentioned in the first verses of Genesis: ‘…darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.’
