‘Our Father in heaven…’ By teaching humans to think of God as their Father, Jesus changed the image they had of him. He led them out of a world governed exclusively by justice, into one of love, goodness and forgiveness. They were no longer the servants of an inflexible, implacable master but the children of a loving, merciful Father. This change in the way people saw the relationship between themselves and the Lord brought with it another even deeper change, also mentioned in the Gospels but not yet fully understood. This change in perspective concerns the nature of human beings themselves. If God is our Father, we are of the same nature as him. You’ll never see a father and his children be of a different nature. And if we are of the same nature as God, we can identify with him. This is why Jesus also said, ‘Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.’
