Ascent and descent ... a truly spiritual person is one who has understood the meaning of this double movement. They know they cannot always stay up at the summit but they do not linger too long down in the dust, noise and commotion of the valleys either. They go up, they come down ... They go up, they come back down ... Coming down is manifesting love; going up is seeking wisdom, studying, meditating and praying. But those who have elevated themselves must think of coming back down in order to help others with their knowledge and their light. True life lies in this double movement. The ascetics, hermits and recluses have not always resolved the problem very well by fleeing into the deserts or caves. And neither have those who have never risen to the summits, in other words those who have never felt the need for a spiritual life.
