Love is a quality of the divine life. This is why you will find love only if you enable the divine life to flow within you – a life purified and illuminated by the practice of the virtues. You look for love, and believe it will come to you from outside, in the form of a person who will be exactly what you hoped for – someone pleasant, good-looking, generous, patient, and so on. Although you yourself are grumpy, selfish and short-tempered, you still expect love to come to you in the shape of an angel! Well, know that your love will only be a reflection of yourself. Even if you were to hold an angel or an archangel in your arms, you would have no sense of their splendour unless you had opened yourself up to the divine world.
