Why do disciples make no progress? Because they allow themselves a great many activities that are not conducive to their spiritual progress, while deluding themselves that these activities won’t take them further away from the summits they wish to attain. Well, no, the fact is, if they let themselves go, experiencing this and tasting that without concern for the quality of their experiences, when they wish to rise to a higher level inside they will no longer be able to free themselves; they will be bound hand and foot. Of course, those who have no ideal, no wish to become magnificent beings for their own sake and that of others, can do what they like; why should they deprive themselves? But those who nurture a great spiritual ideal have to be very careful, very vigilant, and they must select their activities, so they choose only those that are not in contradiction with this ideal.
