Fire - burning our dead branches

When you want to make a fire, you collect some ‘dead’ wood as we say, bare, twisted branches that have nothing beautiful about them until they are ablaze, and then what splendour, what light! By means of fire, these branches that would otherwise be left lying abandoned and useless on the ground are transformed into light, heat and energy. You will say, ‘Yes, we all know that, but how do these dead branches concern us?’ They concern you because, symbolically, they also exist within you. You too have accumulated piles of dry, blackened branches just waiting to be burned. All your selfish, lustful tendencies, all the manifestations of your lower nature, are so much dead wood. Throw them on the fire and they too will produce heat and light.
