The earth is a place of apprenticeship, and we have been sent here for several reasons, the foremost of which is to pay off the debts we have incurred in previous incarnations. Next, we have to understand the situation we find ourselves in at present, and finally, we have to work to perfect every aspect of our being. Most human beings have no idea why they are on earth, so they content themselves with eating, drinking, sleeping and amusing themselves, or quarrelling with others. But those who are enlightened know that they have to use their time on earth to repair the mistakes of their past lives. Then they try to understand why they have been born in a particular country and a particular family and what is expected of them. Finally, they do their best to develop all the seeds of the qualities and virtues planted in them by their Creator from time immemorial. This is why an initiatic school is so vitally important: nothing surpasses the light it sheds on the meaning of a disciple’s life on earth.
