That adversity is a terrible reality is absolutely undeniable. No spiritual teaching will tell you that, whatever happens, you must naively repeat: ‘I’m happy, I’m happy…’ It will simply say that in the midst of your ordeals you must never lose hope, and that the suffering affecting you on one plane does not prevent you from experiencing joy on another. It will tell you above all that, no matter what comes your way, you can always carry out a work with thought, which will enable you not only to stand strong in the midst of your ordeals but to emerge from them enriched. And you will not keep these riches for yourself. By your attitude, by the way you confront these events, you will share them with others.
