It is always preferable to give your spiritual work a goal. So, say to yourself, ‘I am meditating, I am praying for such and such a thing.’ Yes, give the reason, so that the forces you project will be aimed at this specific goal instead of being lost and scattered in all directions. In this way, you will gradually gain mastery of your thoughts. The mind is like a wild horse, it is very difficult to tame it and make it obey. The lamentation of Hindu yogis is often quoted in their books, ‘Oh! Indra, how hard it is to subdue the mind! As soon try to make a rope from sand or to tame the wind!’ But by practising every day and giving your thoughts a goal, they will eventually obey you, and above all become truly effective.
