How are we to interpret the words of Jesus: ‘Be perfect as …

How are we to interpret the words of Jesus: ‘Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect’? First of all, we must provide some explanation of perfection. When a child starts going to school, if he is to learn and progress it is desirable that he be ‘perfect’, in other words that his brain, eyes, ears, arms, legs and so on be in good working order. Otherwise everything will be far more difficult for him. In the same way, with regard to human beings and the perfection Jesus speaks of, this word means first of all that the organs of the psychic and spiritual life must be well developed and in good working order. This is the primary requirement if one aspires to the perfection of God, who is all-knowing, all-loving and all-powerful. This means that in order to become perfect, you must already be perfect! You must therefore seek to attain this first degree of ‘perfection’ which, thanks to your work, will allow you to evolve and, after many incarnations, attain the perfection of God himself.
