When a person speaks, it shows that he wants to take the initiative, to direct, and even to dominate. On the contrary, by remaining silent, a person indicates he is ready to listen, to receive what another says to him. Considered from a philosophical point of view, silence is therefore the distinctive feature of the feminine principle, which receives, submits to, and is shaped by the masculine principle. What conclusion can we draw from this for our inner life? That we must learn to re-establish silence within us, so that the divine Spirit may work on our psychic matter. As long as we are rebellious, stubborn, and anarchic, the Spirit cannot act on us, and we remain weak and miserable. No sooner do we manage to create silence than we place ourselves under the influence of the Spirit.
