Even if you define silence as simply an absence of sound, …

Even if you define silence as simply an absence of sound, there is still a lot that can be said about it. In us, silence is the result of the perfect functioning of our organs: nothing is grating, everything is working perfectly, like a machine with well-oiled cogs. Thus silence implies health, peace, harmony: everything sounds in tune, because each part is in tune with the whole. But sometimes noise can be heard. The noise indicates physical and psychic malaise. All dysfunction symbolically signifies noise, and this noise originates in something ill-conceived, ill-thought out. Or else it’s because there’s a need for oil. Think of the noise an old engine makes when it needs oiling. Whereas, the stars, in contrast, revolve silently in space… In us, that oil is love, which brings all things into harmony.
