Today - living it as if it were your last day

In order to be clear about the importance of the present day, we have to act as if it was to be our last. Some of you will say it’s awful to be continually thinking of death in that way. Well, it isn’t – living each day as if it were your last does not drive you towards death but towards life. No, the ones walking towards death are those who behave in a superficial, careless way while continuing to hope for a better future. Yes, they are squandering their life. When the wise tell us we must live each day as if it was our last, they say it so that we will do our best to make today more useful, more beautiful, more precious… more special! It is not that you really believe it is your last day; you are merely using the idea as a teaching method for living today more fully.
