Pleasures - they serve only to anaesthetize human beings

When Initiates encounter pleasant conditions in life they do not linger in them; in fact they even try to avoid them. But when they encounter a difficult situation they do their best to bear it right to the end. You will wonder, ‘Why? Do Initiates enjoy suffering?’ No, it is simply that they have understood something that children—and most adults, who are often still children—have not understood. Children like only what is easy and sweet, just like the child who prayed before going to bed, ‘Dear Lord, keep Mummy and Daddy and my little brother healthy, and please put vitamins in candy and not in spinach!’ So prays a child! Unfortunately, vitamins will never be found in sweets, just as you will never find spiritual vitamins in pleasure, but rather in work and in difficulties. Only true adults know how to find the treasures buried deep in every trial, every bitterness, whereas prolonged joy and pleasure anaesthetize human beings, keeping them weak and turning them from truth.
