House - make a promise when asking for it to be protected

Somebody goes on holiday, and as they leave they say a little prayer, ‘Lord, keep my house safe from thieves!’ How amazing – the Lord has to look after their house while they are off travelling and amusing themselves. And if, when they return, they find their house has been burgled, they will be furious with God for failing to do His job. Did they really believe that God would bother guarding their house while they went on holiday? Who do human beings think the Lord is? So, it is not surprising that from time to time, the spirits on high decide to teach a lesson to heedless folk who think of God as their caretaker: they urge some rascals to rob them. ‘But isn’t it acceptable to ask God to protect our house?’ you will say. Yes, providing you are humble enough to ask Him to send one of His servants, and not to imagine that God Himself will fulfil this role. In addition, you must give something in return for this service by promising to obey divine rules and plans. Humans are extraordinary: they want everything to go their way without giving anything in exchange. No, you must always give something in return for what you have requested.*
