Cosmic collectivity - the work we do for it is the only work that enriches us

Human beings belong to the universe, just as stones, plants and animals do. But, as thinking beings, they have a particular role to play: they must participate in building the edifice of collective life. As long as they work only for themselves, nothing good can happen to them. You will say, 'What do you mean? If I work for myself, I do gain something!' No, for the 'me' you are working for, this selfish, separate self, is an abyss, and when you work for its sake you are tossing all your riches into this abyss. That is not how you should work. Individualists, egotists, don't see how much they could gain by working for the collectivity. But you must understand that when I speak of 'collectivity' I mean not just the human collectivity but all the creatures in the universe as well, including God himself. This cosmic collectivity, this immensity, for which you must work, is like a bank, and one day everything you do for its sake will come back to you with interest.
