States, negative - an exercise to free yourself from them

When you feel irritated or sad, don't just stay there brooding without doing anything. Go out, go for a walk, and as you walk say to yourself, 'When I reach that tree over there (or that wall, or some other landmark), I will be free of this bad feeling.' Move towards it with the certainty that you are going to be totally freed. When you reach the chosen spot, you will feel lighter, you will feel relieved. If there's not enough improvement, repeat the process, choosing another landmark further away, and state forcefully that at that point your pain will have completely disappeared. Keep going until you feel completely free. Whatever your negative states may be, the important thing is never to remain idle. There is nothing worse than being passive.
