Why is the Black Madonna revered in certain churches? The existence of these Black Madonnas is in fact connected to the alchemical secrets of the transmutation of matter. The raw material on which the alchemist works was originally described as a kind of primordial chaos, of which the Black Madonna is a representation. This is why these statues are usually placed underground in grottoes or crypts: the matter they symbolize is extracted from raw, virgin earth, which explains the term ‘black’. Alchemists say that just as the Virgin suffered to bring Christ into the world, so matter, after a long cooking in the fire, gives birth to the philosopher’s stone, which transmutes metals into gold and cures all illness.
