It is said in the Scriptures: 'Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour.' You belong to a spiritual teaching where the most useful truths are revealed to you. But as soon as you go back to your everyday lives you forget everything, and so, at the earliest opportunity and because you are not vigilant, you fall prey to a few devils. Indeed, because the devils are not as frightening as you may think. If they were, we could see them from afar and be on our guard. Most of the time they are very small and they are hiding. Much like germs, in that we do not watch out for them because we cannot see them, and so they wreak havoc upon the whole of humankind. We must therefore carry within us microscopes with which to identify these 'devils', otherwise, one momentary lapse of concentration, we step out and they have us. Devils do not have horns, claws or hooves, in reality it is far worse. The devils from which we must protect ourselves are all the mistakes we make through heedlessness, slovenliness and lack of attention.
