Nature exhibits an amazing diversity of forms, but on the …

Nature exhibits an amazing diversity of forms, but on the other hand we see a great similarity between individuals belonging to the same species. Take trees, for example… Oaks, poplars, fig trees – how different the shapes of their leaves are! Whereas, the leaves from the same tree are all alike. Look at fishes, too, and insects – how many different species and forms there are! But can you distinguish between one fly and another from the same species? Now, if you compare the faces of several people who have a strong spiritual life, you will find a real difference and wealth of expression! But look at crude, primitive people who have no inner life; their expressions are identical. On the one hand you have simplification, and on the other, differentiation. The higher we rise, the more simplified and unified we become, but also the more expressive, vibrant, alive and subtle. And the further we descend into the lower realms, the more forms multiply, but the more individuals lose their expressiveness.
