Daily Meditation: Saturday, November 15, 1997

If you look carefully at a tree you will see that …

If you look carefully at a tree you will see that everything is in its roots. The trunk, the branches, the flowers, the fruit are merely an expression of the roots, which manifest themselves in beauty, colour, splendour, flavour, and scent. The roots themselves are black, ugly, expressionless, but what comes out of them is marvellous and if they should disappear there would be nothing left, no trunk, no branches, no flowers, no fruit. Everyone who is amazed by the wonder of trees never thinks of the roots, how intelligent and competent these must be to produce such splendour. The roots are never talked about because they remain in the dark. But damage them, and that is the end of the tree. If, however, the roots are healthy, even if the branches are dead, the tree can come back to life again. This is something worth thinking about. In the human body the roots are represented by the solar plexus. Everything about us stems from the solar plexus.
